All states require public school teachers to be licensed. In private schools, however, teachers are not required to be licensed. Requirements vary by state.Many states award provisional teaching licenses to new teachers. After a period of several years of acceptable teaching experience, applicants may apply for a professional teaching license.Some states also require applicants to submit their fingerprints and undergo a background check.
